Hell, even the great David Byrne is a fan, putting one of their songs in a playlist on his blog. For a comparison of their wide-reaching sounds, think Talking Heads and Tom Petty rolling around with the psychedelic side of Super Furry Animals, all wrapped up in the the production ethic of DFA records, and you'd be on the right track. Mike Sempert, the man with their plan, had a second to discuss his world with HIDDEN RADIO, and this is what the man said.
Congratulations on the new record, and the successful Kickstarter campaign. Can you tell us a bit about the process you went through getting it to completion?
Thanks so much! Each record is its own journey and Stray Light definitely took a lot of time to finish. Some of the songs like "Be My Girl" and "Golden Age of Dreams" felt very direct and were fast to write (though the Golden Age mix took a long time). Others like "Arctic Flowers" and "My Life Is Mine" were kicking around for the better part of a decade! The process was a hybrid of studio recording at Tiny Telephone in SF and home recording at my apartment in Oakland.
We know that you recently did a late summer tour. Any interesting or funny stories from the road? Any local Bay Area shows coming up?
Well, I'm drawing a blank on anything in particular- that feels like a long time ago already! We stayed up all night in Ft. Worth and had a dance party that eventually resulted in a battle royale of wind up toys. Our next show is November 16th at Rebel in SF, with DOOMbird who did an amazing remix of I Want You which you can hear here:

and the illustrious DJ COLE of the band oWNERSHIP who you can check out here:

Any other bands that you met that you liked playing with?
We always enjoy playing with our friends Telegraph Canyon (Ft. Worth), Laarks (Eau Claire), Writer (NYC). We also played with King Tuff in Lubbock who were super fun.
I figure that you probably have a whole new album's worth of material written and ready to record, as you seem to be so prolific. Any new songs or ideas that you'd care to talk about?
Well thanks man! I feel so fortunate that I get to make records. I've got a solo album in the works which is my primary thing right now, but I'm also working on some electronic music. Taking a break from tour has opened up the flood gates which is very exciting but now its just a matter of putting the pieces together and making the time required to complete these ideas. It might be a while before B&B has a new record to offer, but you never know.
What do you like about our product, HiddenRadio?
I'm really into this HiddenRadio thing! I love the versatility and compactness. It's getting a lot of time in my kitchen right now. In the morning I like to brew up some fresh pots while listening to NPR, and at night cooking up dinner with the tunes via Rdio. Mostly I use my iPhone for all this, but also if we're watching a show on the web, its easy to wirelessly connect with the laptop. Great device!
